Where to stay in Rotterdam

Looking for a place to stay in Rotterdam can be a bit overwhelming, if you don’t know the neighborhoods and what to expect there. But don’t worry, I will help you find your perfect place to stay. Although Rotterdam is a very safe city, some neighborhoods don’t have a good name. For example it is not recommended to stay in Rotterdam Zuid (Charlois, Feijenoord, Hoogvliet, or IJsselmonde).

There were also other areas in the city like Katendrecht and Witte de Whitstraat which used to have a bad image until the 80s, but have completely changed since, as the city council is doing their best to make Rotterdam a safe place for tourists and locals alike. Now this places are thriving and have turned into hipster destinations.

City Center

The City Center is the most popular area to stay in Rotterdam. All Rotterdam attractions and museums are just at a walking distance and there are lots of cafes and restaurants. This is also my preferred area to stay.

Katendrecht and Kop van Zuid

Katendrecht is an up-and-coming neighborhood. It has been completely overhauled in the last decades and today it’s famous for it’s hip and artsy atmosphere. The Fenix Food Factory is one place not to miss in Katendrecht.

Kop van Zuid used to be part of the old harbor of Rotterdam and has been also completely redeveloped making it a trendy spot with lots of skyscrapers cool spots.

Delfshaven

Delfshaven is like no other part of Rotterdam. It has still preserved it typical Dutch architecture, as it was the only neighborhood in Rotterdam that survived the WW2 bombing.

Delfshaven is also the place from where the Pilgrims, who lived in exile in Holland, sailed in 1620 to the New World. If you look for charm, this is the neighborhood to stay in Rotterdam.

Blijrdorp / Rotterdam Noord

Blijdorp is a relatively new neighborhood built in the 1930s. It’s famous for the zoo with the same name Diergaarde Blijdorp (Rotterdam Zoo). If you stay in Blijdorp, you are in no time in the city center, but there are not much accommodation offered there as it is predominantly a residential area.

Rotterdam Noord and in particular Het Oude Noorden (Old North) is the neighborhood behind the train station. This area was developed at the end of 19th century as a residential area, because the city center was getting too small.

Kralingen

Kralingen can be split up in two – the upscale Kralingen-Oost (East Kralingen), which is one of the most expensive residential areas in the Netherlands, and Kralingen-West (West Kralingen), on the other hand, which is a working-class district.

Kralingen is famous for the lake Kralingse Plas, which is a loved place for water recreation and the surrounding Kralingse Bos (Kranlingse Forest). Surprisingly, there aren’t many hotels in this area of Rotterdam.
